Tourism

Lead cultural visits that communities welcome back.

The practical cultural course for working guides: enter a community with consent, protect fragile sites and residents' access, present culture as the community tells it, handle artifacts and the law, and carry a concern to the right person, all mapped to GSTC v4.0, before you or your operator are audited on it.

What you’ll be able to do.

Why it matters now

GSTC v4.0 now sets specific indicators for how tours treat communities, heritage sites, and cultural artifacts. Guides are the ones on the ground when consent, a sacred site, or a souvenir is on the line. This course gets you ready before you or your operator are audited on it.

Who it’s for

For working culture, heritage and community-tour guides in Costa Rica and the wider region, and open to guides anywhere. New and freelance guides are welcome, and operators are kept informed. No background assumed.

Six modules, 45–60 minutes.

  1. 01

Why Cultural Conduct Is Your Job

Why culture, heritage, and sacred sites are part of a guide's job, and the five skills the course builds.

  2. 02

Respect as a Practice: People, Cultures, and Consent

Ask for consent the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) way, apply the rules that hold in every community, and model guest guidelines yourself.

  3. 03

Fragile Places: Carrying Capacity and Access

Match group size and timing to what a site can hold, set capacity with the community, and keep residents' access to their own spaces.

  4. 04

    Presenting Culture Authentically

Tell authentic from staged, know the story behind what you show, and let the community do the telling.

  5. 05

    Artifacts and the Law

What guests can't take or buy, how to spot a likely-looted object, what the law requires, and souvenirs they can buy with a clear conscience.

  6. 06

When Concerns Arise, and Your Commitment

Hear, record, route, and follow up on a concern, then review the course and set one commitment to carry forward.
