Tourism

Lead wildlife encounters that are good for the animal, the site, and the guest.

The practical wildlife course for working guides: read an animal's welfare with the Five Domains, manage distance, group size, and disturbance, keep invasive species off your trails, and spot the facilities and products that cross the line, all mapped to GSTC v4.0, before you or your operator are audited on it.

Some of the organizations we’ve worked with.

What you’ll be able to do.

Why it matters now

GSTC v4.0 sets out 11 indicators covering animal welfare, viewing conduct, invasive species and prohibited wildlife products (D10, D11.5/11.6, D12, D13, D14), so field conduct that used to rest on a guide's judgment is now something an auditor asks you to evidence.

Who it’s for

For working nature and wildlife guides in Costa Rica and the wider region, and open to guides anywhere. New and freelance guides are welcome, and operators are kept informed. No background assumed.

Six modules, from why it matters to what you do about it.

  1. 01

Why Wildlife Conduct Is Your Job

Why responsible conduct around wildlife and natural sites is now expected of guides, and how to turn good instincts into habits so a great encounter isn't down to luck.

  2. 02

Reading Animal Welfare: The Five Domains

Read any animal's welfare with the Five Domains, spot the signs of stress, and know what to do the moment you see it.

  3. 03

In the Field: Distance, Groups, Disturbance

Hold the right distance, with real minimums for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and sloths, and manage group size, noise, and time to keep encounters low-impact.

  4. 04

    Natural Sites and Invasive Species

Give guests site guidelines they'll actually follow, and stop seeds, spores, and pests riding between sites with a simple check, clean, dry routine.

  5. 05

    The Lines You Don't Cross

Read a wildlife facility in 60 seconds, test a “conservation hunt” claim, and steer guests away from souvenirs that fund wildlife crime.

  6. 06

When Something's Wrong, and Your Commitment

Recognize a concern, record it, route it to whoever can fix it, and close the loop, then set one commitment for your next tour.

Questions, answered.

01Does this course certify my tours, or my operation?

No. This course prepares guides and operators for GSTC readiness. It doesn't confer certification — that's earned by the organization through the certifying body.

02I'm a freelance guide, not part of an operator — is this for me?

Yes. New and freelance guides are welcome, and the course covers how to recognize, record and route a concern even when you run your own trips rather than reporting into an operator.

03Do I need a wildlife biology background?

No background is assumed. The course builds the field skills from the ground up — reading welfare with the Five Domains, managing distance and disturbance, and recognizing what crosses the line.
